We have seen the cost of fuel spike and drop dramatically over the last 12 months. When prices were at their peak, consumers were very cautious with how often they drove and how far they went.
Now that prices have dropped, it is still important to maximize fuel efficiency. Here are a few tips to improve your gas mileage:
- Don’t speed. Gas mileage can be significantly reduced at speeds over 60mph. You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.25 per gallon for gas.
- Avoid idling. Anytime you are sitting idle, your gas mileage is zero. If you will be stationary for an extended period of time, turn off your engine to reduce fuel consumption.
- Remove extra cargo. Take out any unnecessary items from your vehicle. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%.
