Save as PDF from Office 2007 programs

Now you don’t need Adobe Acrobat to create a PDF. With this Office Add-In, you can save your file in PDF or XPS format directly from the program. From the download page: “This download allows you to export and save to the PDF and XPS formats in eight 2007 Microsoft Office programs. It also allows you to send as e-mail attachment in the PDF and XPS formats in a subset of these programs.”

This is a great new feature – especially considering the Acrobat PDFMaker toolbar is not available for Office 2007 if you are running Acrobat 8.0 or earlier (read the tech notes). I don’t use Acrobat enough to warrant the upgrade costs to get the PDFMaker, so I’m quite happy to see this add-in from Microsoft.

I downloaded, installed and did a few quick tests on random files. All that’s required to make a PDF is clicking file, save as. You can even have the PDF optimized for online publication. How very cool!
