Protecting Identity is More than a Lock in Your Browser

The majority of Internet users are familiar with the lock on a browser to show the website is secured. That is an important means of guarding personal data when submitting a web form. Here are five other steps you can take to help minimize your risk of identity theft.

  1. Be careful when using public hotspots
Do not connect to websites requiring a password while connected through a public Wi-Fi. While free hotspots are convenient for browsing the Internet or checking email, they are also unsecured. This makes them an ideal target for identity thieves.
  2. Be wary of emails asking you to confirm something
Never click a link in an email asking you to verify your information. Your bank, mortgage lender, credit card processor or other financial institution would never ask for your private data through an email. If you think the email may be legitimate, call the company using the phone number on your most recent statement or on the back of your credit card.
  3. Be secure on your home office network
If you use a wireless network in your home office, be sure you have implemented either WPA or WEP security. You should also change the default SSID that comes with your router. After configuring your router, make the necessary updates on each computer or device that will be connecting to the router.
  4. Be aware of your surroundings
If you need to contact your bank or other organization with your private information, do so from the safety of your own home. When out in public, never call somewhere that will require you to disclose account data, pin numbers, social security numbers or other sensitive data.
  5. Be cautious with your postal mail
An identity thief isn’t above going through your garbage to get your personal details. Protect yourself by investing in a small household shredder and using it to dispose of unwanted mail. Be especially thorough when shredding financial offers such as credit cards, car loans and mortgage lenders.
