SFS fosters networking with new group

Over the years I have been part of several online membership groups. Taking my experience with each group and speaking with other home business owners over the last year I realized we all face the same challenges. Whether you are a product consultant or a Virtual Assistant – working from home is tough.

I wanted to create a place where everyone facing these challenges could meet and share, socialize and laugh, support and assist each other. Voila – Home Business Network was imagined.

Membership in HBN is absolutely free. Anyone with a home business is welcome to join at no charge. All members have access to the forums to interact with other members on topics of family, work and more. Premium Membership is available for a nominal fee for members interested in a public profile and access to the Job Board section of the forums. Premium Members also enjoy private messaging options and spam bypass on the forums for quicker posting.

There are no member graphics or silly requirements that you link from your site to HBN. You don’t need to offer testimonials on what a great person you are to gain entrance. If you own a home business – you’re invited. Simple.

My goal is to see HBN flourish by members for members. You know best what information you need and what advice you can offer others. By creating a brain trust among our members we can all be a bit more successful and open some wonderful doors to networking previously unavailable through groups focusing only on one type of business.

New Year, New Look

After much behind-the-scenes work, I have launched the new look for Sunfrog Services, LLC. The new layout should make it easier to find information like the Print Catalog and Free PHP Scripts. To achieve this look I created both a WordPress theme and Zen Cart template. The sunfrogservices.com website uses WordPress for the main articles and Zen Cart for eCommerce.

There are still several features I will be rolling out over the next few weeks and months. But, to celebrate the completion of Phase I of the redesign I am offering clients a 15% discount on all postcard orders from now until the end of January. To take advantage of this discount, enter JAN2010WEB at checkout (limit one per client).

At the close of another year, I gratefully pause to wish you a warm and happy holiday season and a successful new year.

Holiday hours

My office will be closed December 24, 25, 31 and January 1 to spend time with family and friends. I will be back in the office full time January 4, 2010.

Shipping schedule

Due to the holidays any printed items ordered through December 31 will be shipped the first week of January. Deliveries should arrive by January 8. Expedited processing is available upon request.

Online orders

Any orders designed online will process and ship according to the above schedule.

New version of WP-Testimonials plugin released

It’s been long overdue, but I finally was able to update WP-Testimonials to version 2.0. This latest version requires WordPress 2.8 or higher due to the new widget control functions. During the updates, I made several improvements and added several configuration options based on requests and feedback from users of the previous version.

WP-Testimonials 2.0 can be upgraded directly within your dashboard or you may download the new version from this site. You may also choose to install the plugin through your dashboard by choosing “add new” under the plugins header and searching for “testimonials”.

Here are the changes made to this release:

Compatibility with WP2.5 through WP2.8.3
Random block now pulls testimonial via “ORDER BY RAND” for true random order
Removed obsolete field in table “views”
Pages/posts can now be created using shortcode (eliminates the need for a custom theme page)
Added “read more” link to random sidebar block
Added configuration options to show/hide “read more” link in sidebar with customizable text
Added options to delete table upon deactivation

Take the Pledge – Reduce Water Bottle Waste

According to FilterForGood.com, Americans send 38 Billion water bottles to landfills every year. FilterForGood is a partnership between Brita and Nalgene to help reduce water bottle waste through a pledge campaign.

In addition to facts on the impact bottle waste has on the environment, their website also offers “Green-Over” tips from environmental activist Josh Dorfman. Some of his Green-Overs take less than a minute to implement.

Even if you don’t participate in the FilterForGood pledge, you can reduce waste by using a reusable water bottle in your home or office. Consider investing in a water filtration pitcher, a refrigerator dispenser or an Energy Star water cooler.

We live in a world of now, now, now. And many of us leave our computers running overnight to perform various checks and scans so we can save the day hours for productive (hopefully billable) work. Leaving those computers on overnight, however, results in a significant use of unnecessary energy.

Cleaning Your Office? Help a School

With Spring just around the corner, perhaps now is a good time to look around your office for unused supplies and donate them to a local school. With the global economy worsening, many school districts have been forced to reduce their budgets which means less funding for supplies, textbooks and other items.

I Love Schools, Inc. is helping teachers gain access to desperately needed materials. There are over 95,000 US Public Schools in the database. Teachers are able to register with the site and create a wish list that generous donors may then view.

Founded in 1998, Adopt-A-Classroom is another online organization designed to help teachers and schools. They have been an extensive searchable database to locate schools in your local area that have registered with the site. Each teacher may then post specific items they are seeking and donors may then contribute money towards the purchase of those items.
