In the blink of an eye
On the way home from the vet tonight I was feeling frustrated about my day. Zi (our pug) had an allergic reaction to the bordetella vaccine she got at her appointment this morning. The reaction causes her face to swell tremendously and with her smushed-in nose, this could lead to breathing problems. I called the vet and they said to rush her back in so they could treat her.
I came home early afternoon to wait on them to call and say she could come home. Finally at 6:30, I called them to be told she was “better”, but still needed to be monitored. They would let me take her home if we would watch her through the night and give her baby doses of benadryl over the weekend to keep the reaction under control.
On my way home from picking her up, we passed a car that was flipped over, obviously from an accident. I looked twice at the people standing around and recognized one of the dance moms and then at a second glance at the car realized it was HER that had been in the accident. This isn’t a mom I see often, but we do chat when we cross paths. She is someone I know — someone who in the blink of an eye could have been gone.
Having her cell phone number from the various competitions and conventions where the moms all share numbers “just in case”, I called her immediately to see if she was OK. She said she was fine and that her car had saved her life. She was leaving Blockbuster and crossing the intersection when someone ran a red light (at a 90 angle to her). The car was speeding through the intersection and slammed into her with enough force to flip her SUV. Fortunately, neither one of her children were with her - she was alone in the car. But even more fortunately, she walked away without serious injury.
Suddenly, my day doesn’t seem so bad. I’m grateful that she is OK and hope the person that ran the red light (one of my top pet peeves) receives the maximum punishment for the accident.
Your life can change that quickly… in the blink of an eye. Cherish today, appreciate the ones in your life that matter and always remember there is more good than bad if you choose to see it.
