Reducing my ecological footprint
My friend JJ posted a great article on her site: “How Green Are You“. While I try to make smart decisions and conserve where I can, I still had a feeling I’d bomb the game. I drive over 30 miles each weekday and our community has no recycling program in place. I figured those would be the areas where I was at the biggest fault. Surprisingly my score of 3.8 planets was better than I expected.
More surprisingly was food needed more improvement than transportation (only by 1 point, but still). And I buy organic when I can. I chose 10-35%, but we may be closer to the 36-60% range. Making the change in the food category to the higher percentage dropped our planets to 3.6. Not much, but an improvement nonetheless. It looks like the biggest offender in the food category is my 2 cups of coffee every morning.
With the planet in the situation it’s in we should all be more aware of our consumption. Want to know how many planets would be needed to support your lifestyle? Jodi, considering you are parenting school-age children, a score of 3.6 or 3.8 is actually very good.
We are shaped by our society. Americans recycle less than almost any other country in the world. Our economy is driven by conspicuous consumption, so sustainable technology efforts face an uphill battle.
I took the test as if I were a typical middle class American. The score was 6.9. Now, THAT’s scary.
