A second X-Files movie - could it really happen?

My start page in Firefox is a collection of my favorite RSS feeds. Most are sports related, but I also have the Sims, some technology news and a few from entertainment sites. Today one headline caught my eye in the entertainment section. It was about David Duchovny’s new show on Showtime.

Now, I’m a child of the 80’s and was a die-hard X-Files fan in the 90’s. It was a terrible adjustment when the show went off the air and Friday nights were left with nothing on to watch. Granted, the true fans were left wanting for the last few seasons. The episodes never seemed to quite reach the level of those when Duchovny’s Agent Mulder was on the trail of the smoking man. Never mind the movie, which was totally lacking when all of the fans had such high hopes.

But today, while reading about Duchovny’s new character I stumble across a comment he is expecting filming for X-Files 2 to begin later this year. Huh? X-Files 2? Really? At first I was overjoyed thinking finally we will have some resolution on all those open items the show left hanging. Then I was thinking that probably won’t happen because the audience this movie will be written for probably won’t even know that there was once a TV show called X-Files! Curiosity took over and led me on a wormhole search through the Internet to try and get to the bottom of is there or isn’t there an X-Files 2 movie in the works.

I started at Gillian Anderson’s website. Her comments, while posted sporadically, are an interesting read. On the latest news page there is an excerpt from an interview with the X-Files creator. That information led me to the Entertainment Weekly website where I read the complete interview. Here is the August 1, 2007 interview with X-Files creator Chris Carter from the EW website.

According to what Chris says there, a script is really in the works for X-Files 2. He doesn’t commit to much beyond that. So I guess I don’t know much more than when I started my search except that there is hope of making the movie for a possible release date next summer. I only hope that if they do get it done, the movie does justice to the original series.
