A new handbag is always an adventure

VAIO sized handbagMy adventures with a new purse start from the moment I decide I’m shopping for one and don’t end until I’ve transferred the contents from the old one. I say this while sighing a big relief that my most recent hunt for a new handbag is finally complete.

I set out looking for a new purse shortly after I bought the Sony VAIO. As this little baby is so small, I thought I could find a handbag large enough to accommodate the computer without being obnoxiously huge. I bought a leather carrying case for the VAIO to protect it, which meant I needed slightly more room than I would for the VAIO alone.

My sense of size has never been very strong so trying to visualize the computer while in a store became a joke. I even went so far as to buy a handbag I thought would work only to get it home and discover the VAIO wouldn’t fit through the zippered top.

Today. Now today I had an “ah ha” moment. I didn’t want to bring the VAIO out and about to all the store, but what was stopping me from bringing the case? Yes, a perfect solution. Bring the case, try it in the purse and then I would know for sure if it was a good fit.

The first store actually had several that worked, but they were a bit larger than I wanted. I walked back through the section a second time and found exactly what I was looking for in the very back of the rack. I removed all of the paper from inside the purse and tested the placement of the case. It fit! And not only did it fit, but there are two separate compartments inside so I can keep my “work” stuff from my “personal” stuff.

Of course you can’t buy a new purse without a new wallet. :-) Which, of course, meant another 20 minutes in the store trying to find the perfect wallet. I finally selected on that is remarkably similar to my old one (only without the frayed elastic) and proceeded to pay for my purchases.

I came home and started the process of moving things from the old purse to the new one. You wouldn’t believe the old receipts, empty gum wrappers and oh my how many ponytail holders I found! So, I am now all setup with the new purse. And, will only bring the laptop if I plan on using it. So, the purse is a bit empty without the computer, but having the room there is what I wanted in the first place.

  1. What about a picture?

I have always been one to own but one handbag at a time. That means it has to be very neutral and nondescript. Keep it, use it with everything, then eventually replace it when it is wrecked or scuffed beyond belief. Why have an entire wardrobe of handbags?

Since the first of our boys was old enough to acquire a girlfriend, I entered a new phase in my life. Girlfriends as handbag role models made me take a different look at what I was hauling around. I learned to dump my frumpy ways and have acquired (and kept!) four handbags in the last 8 or so years.

I am now acquainted with the change-the-bag-to-go-with-the-outfit move. I’m still not exactly a girly girl (as a geek woman that would not be possible), but I have discovered the joy of having bags as actual accessories. It’s just fun!

  2. Added a picture for you. The handbag measures 14w X 9h X 5d (not including the strap). I’m finding I don’t use it as often as I thought. I keep my wireless card and my USB flashdrive with me in my “regular” purse all the time. So lately, I’ve just grabbed the VAIO in its case and carried it by hand.

I usually have one bag I keep for a year or two before it wears out. I haven’t attempted the change with the outfit thing.
