Day 6 and all is well

Today is day 6 since Trinity laid the clutch and everything seems to be going well. The temperature has stayed between 82-83 and the egg boxes have kept some moisture on the walls and lid. I have opened each box once to be sure the substrate is still moist, but have otherwise been an observer through the windows.

The boxes were in good shape when I opened them. I gave each a very light mist to compensate for being opened. There were no foul odors indicating and egg may have gone bad. The eggs were all plump and looked to be a bit larger than when I first moved them. I wish I had taken a few measurements on day one, but it didn’t occur to me at the time.

I’m not sure exactly what day they’ll hatch, but 65 seems to be the average based on what I’ve read. Man, day 65 seems SO far away!

  1. Hi, Being a mother to 3 boys I had to get used to reptiles and non-girlish pets. We had 2 bearded dragons and they had 3 clutches of eggs over 1 summer. Seeing that we have 90% humidity over the summer months and it stays 90 in the day and 78 at night, I made a mixture of regular dirt and 1/2 vermiculite. I put dirt mixture in a tin foil square thing that you can buy brownies in, etc. I made farmer vegetable rows with my finger and put the eggs in each row, half way down. I moistened the dirt and kept the heavy plastic top that kept the brownies fresh, on top of the eggs. I kept the eggs outside on my linai where it received afternoon sun (but not direct sun). I checked daily to see if there were condensation bubbles inside the plastic lid. I peeked outside and saw a baby dragon running around inside the container. It took 81 days. How exciting! Within 3 days I had them eating baby crickets, and minced greens. We had to sell babies because after 3 clutches, we had so many. We sold them to 2 local pet stores. What an experience! So much fun and a lot of learning involved… Just thought I would share our experience. Good luck and have fun with your hatchlings.

  2. Thanks for the story, Marian! I’m only on day 14 and it feels like forever. The humidity is staying pretty high (I can see the water droplets inside the plastic dishes) and the temp is sitting around 83. So, I think everything is going well. My local pet store has said they’ll buy the babies after they are a month old. Which is great — because most of the people I know are not reptile people. 8O
