WordPress conversion: tags, clouds and stats
The conversion has been complete for nearly a week and my traffic has remained steady. There are several things I still need to get back online: the photo gallery, the file downloads and some type of tracking system for story views. Overall, I am happy with the changes and think WordPress will be a comfortable fit for me.
Much of the first few days was spent retagging my articles under new and/or additional categories. Under Geeklog, I had one topic I could post to for each story. On WP, in order to utilize the tag cloud (Word Press Heat Map) I need to make better use of the categories. So, I had to go through each blog by hand and do the category assignments. Thank goodness I only had around 70 posts.
I haven’t been a big fan of the tag clouds before, but they are growing on me. Now I can see where my own interests are. LOL I usually just drop in a post when I think about it. I never sit down and plan Business on Monday, Sims on Tuesday or whatever. It’s just what I’m thinking as I’m thinking it (if I have a computer nearby).
There are no built-in statistics. As a stats junkie, I headed over to the Codex to see what was out there. After trying several, I think I have found a combination that gives me everything I want. I’m using Live (to see visitors in real time), StatTraq (which offers some in-depth analysis) and WordPress Reports (which pulls in my Google Analytics data).
I am still looking for a plugin that will tell me how many hits each post has received. I tried one, but it kept throwing errors. I’ll keep looking, but it isn’t the highest thing on my list right now. The photo gallery and file downloads are a bit more of a priority for me. I hope to get them back on the site in some fashion over the weekend.
