Made the jump from Geeklog to WordPress

I’ve been considering making this switch for some time. While I love Geeklog, it was starting to be cumbersome for me to go in and blog. I struggle with blogging regularly and need something that makes it as quick and easy as possible to get my thoughts online. If I have to think too much about it, chances are I won’t get it done.

Geeklog has been a great system for the last few years and I still highly recommend it for sites needing user authentication and restricted access for certain areas. The RemoteProfessionals.com site works wonderfully on Geeklog. For my own needs, it was just too much. I guess you could say it outgrew me.

Of the systems I’ve used to date, WordPress is by far the easiest blog to install and requires the least amount of work to maintain. I found a theme that worked with my header and had the colors I liked for my site. After downloading WordPress and the theme, I had the installation complete within minutes. I was even able to track down a converter that pulled in my content from Geeklog so I didn’t have to copy/paste everything by hand. Some of the content had to be cleaned up. There were some funky characters where quotes or apostrophes once were, but other than that, the migration worked well.

Thanks to Just Dave for the Geeklog to WordPress converter. And thanks to n4th4n for explaining how to use it. Being still new to the admin tools in WordPress, I never would’ve figured this out without the instructions posted in the WordPress forums at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/10777.
