Priorities: groceries or gadgets
My digital cable box was starting to skip on some channels and there were a few others that wouldn’t come in at all. The local cable office is just down the road, so I decided to drive down and swap my box out for a replacement. While in line, I was listening to the woman in front of me. She was a senior citizen and was discussing the various plan options with the clerk. Throughout the conversation I gathered the woman had a digital DVR box and wanted to drop some channels that she did not watch. As the conversation continued, she explained to the clerk she was on a fixed income and needed to cut expenses where she could. The clerk recommended returning the box and going with just the basic package; a savings of nearly $45.00 per month. The woman said that while she could live without HBO and Showtime, she couldn’t live without her DVR.
It made me stop and wonder at her priorities. If her budget is that limited, wouldn’t it be wiser to reduce your cable bill as much as possible so your funds could go to more important things - like groceries? But, such is the hold technology has on our society.
