Finally have Firefox playing media files

You forget how many tweaks and changes you make to software as you use it. When you install software fresh, you’re rudely reminded.

My preferred browser is Mozilla’s Firefox. I love being able to open new sites in a tab rather than a new window. For the first few days on my new system, I used the pre-installed Internet Explorer for sake of convenience. After only a few days, I had to go get Firefox.

The installation went fine and I imported my old bookmarks from the laptop. I have to recreate my saved passwords lists, but that needed to be cleaned out anyhow. Everything was going well until I went to my family blog and tried to view a movie file. The file is Windows Media Player format. Firefox told me it was missing a plugin.

I went and searched the plugins list from the “manual install” link and could only find the full install of Media Player. The new machine came with version 10 pre-installed, so I knew installing it again wouldn’t solve my problem. After some research I found a guide on MozillaZine explaining how to embed Windows Media Player in Firefox. After following the instructions and installing the xpi file, the videos played great.
