My shiny new desktop

For the last few years, I’ve been using a laptop exclusively. At the time I bought it, it was the fastest thing available. It’s still competitive with the current models, but over time it has gotten slower and runs hotter. It’s also a beast at about 8 pounds! After debating for some time on investing in another laptop or going back to a desktop, I opted for the latter. I figured the laptop could be reformatted with only the bare basics I need to work remotely. I’m starting to do more with the digital camera and video and thought having the desktop would give me more options for plugging things in.

The new system is a Dell XPS 400. It’s shiny silver and blazing fast. I’m thrilled with the abundance of USB and look forward to using the DVD-RW. This is the first DVD burner we’ve owned and I’ve already made some home movies for the family. This system also has headset plugs in the front (what a concept!). When a call comes in over Voice over IP, I just have to lean over and plug in the headset. It’s also handy for times when I want to listen to stream my XM satellite and don’t want to bother everyone else with the volume.

It’s taken me a few days to get everything transitioned over. I didn’t realize how many stored passwords, bookmarks and other shortcuts I used until I had to recreate them from scratch. I think I’m past the biggest bump and am now running the new machine solo. I was running both in tandem for awhile to be sure I didn’t miss any correspondence during the switch.

Dell says the XPS is Vista compatible - now if Vista would just be released!
