American Idol and The Apprentice: My Thoughts
There are a few reality TV shows I watch; very few. Most of my television viewing is spent on live sports and crime dramas. When I do stop for reality, the only shows that have any interest for me are American Idol and The Apprentice. After watching the next-to-last episodes of both shows, here are my thoughts on the remaining contestants and my outcome predictions.
Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee, the two remaining contestants, were not the best singers in the competition by far. Although I like Taylor’s energy and he seems to be personable enough, he is not the greatest singer to come out of season 5. And, how Katharine is even still in this competition baffles me. She has been inconsistent and even forgot the words to one of her songs during a performance. The judges have sung her praises even an on bad night, which still makes me shake me head and wonder if they are hearing the same thing I am. She also lacks personality. For some reason, I have not been able to connect with her on any level, no matter the song. It always appears to me that she is just a singer - she doesn’t feel the music, doesn?t interpret the song, she just sings. Taylor, on the other hand, obviously connects with every piece he does, regardless of genre. While I don’t think he should have won American Idol 2006, I do think he is the best of the remaining two. After last night’s show, I can?t imagine Taylor NOT winning. His songs were better, he sang better and he entertained better. It’s extremely unfortunate that Chris Daughtry, Elliot Yamin and Paris Bennett never made the finals. I still can?t imagine Katherine received more votes than Chris. Of everyone I?ve asked that watches the show, they unfailing say Chris should have won. He was the hands-down best singer and most consistent performer throughout the show. I know Paris was voted off a few weeks back, but I still believe she is a better singer than Katherine and I think Paris would have served the title of “American Idol” very well had she won. I do hope to see all three of my personal favorites (Chris, Elliot and Paris) out in stores sometime in the future. I think they are all very talented and expect they will achieve their own success outside of the show. During the TV show Extra, members of the band Fuel offered Chris lead singer duties. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Boy was I glad to finally see those two snotty women fired! For the last few weeks Allie and Roxanne have done little more than whine and cry. These two spend more time rolling their eyes and making faces with their noses turned up than actually working. I can?t imagine Trump would have considered hiring either one after the debacle at the Wal-Mart. Even Bill mentioned how catty they are and how they just couldn’t work together as a result.
My favorite this entire season has been Sean. He is a team player, hard worker and tries to ensure everyone works well together. I’m unsure about the whole “metrosexual” thing, but it served Gold Rush well in the most recent task. The uniforms he and Lee designed were functional and practical. The slits for the chefs and the all-climate options for the front door men were brilliant. What WAS Synergy thinking, by the way? Did they really think a chef was going to wear a satin outfit (or whatever shiny material that was) made of those gosh-awful colors? I was laughing out loud when I saw their models come out. Did you catch the puffy sleeves? Holy cow!
Barring a disaster in the final task, I fully expect Sean to win The Apprentice 5. Lee is a great politician and thinks big. It wouldn?t surprise me to see him in a public office someday. But, I think he lacks creativity and has challenges when it comes to leading a team; especially a large one. This season has not been one of the most entertaining and there aren?t many personal conflicts I can recall that will drastically effect the final team assignments. I am excited that America will get to vote for the season finale.
