Geeklog 1.4.0 released in Beta

Being an avid Geeklog lover, I was thrilled to hear Geeklog 1.4 was finally released. The release is in Beta, a necessary step in the development of any software. This release offers some great new features like trackbacks, pingbacks, FCKeditor and has support for additional syndication (RSS) options.

While the FCKeditor is a big attraction for non-developer folks, the biggest draw for me is the trackback/pingback element. I have often blogged about articles read on other blog sites and have wanted to link back quickly. Previously, this had to be done using HTML and it wasn’t a true trackback. Now, with a click in the admin area, I can quickly send pings to web services and/or trackbacks to related articles.

The FCKeditor is a great new tool for users with no HTML knowledge. It’s a very functional WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) text editor. It allows anyone posting to the site the option of customizing colors, fonts, bullets and hyperlinks, similar to a word processing program.

All in all, it’s a great update. I’ve upgraded both SunFrogServices.com and the SunFrog Blog to 1.4.0b1. So far, there have been a few issues, but the major ones have all been addressed through CVS.

If you are not experienced in PHP or have no background with Geeklog, I highly recommend waiting for the stable release once beta testing is complete. However, if you know what you’re doing- drop in 1.4.0b1 and enjoy the added control and flexibility of Geeklog’s latest release.
