Cell phones and driving — never a good mix
One of my biggest pet peeves has always been someone talking on the cell phone while driving. I haven’t gone so far as to put the “Shut up and drive” bumper sticker on my car, but I’ve told a few of these distracted drivers how I feel about it (while sitting behind them at a GREEN light waiting on them to realize it’s changed).
These drivers as so busy chatting, they don’t notice their constant fluctuation in speed, swerving from one white line to the other or the constantly changing environment around them. They are an incredible risk to everyone around them - and they don’t care. They’re too busy planning their next social outing, discussing their next business meeting or talking about the next school function.
Yet these drivers, when not on the phone, are the first to complain about another’s driving. Ironic, isn’t it?
Wired News, one of my favorite publications, recently published a commentary by Tony Long, the copy chief. He sums up every thought I’ve had on this issue. Thanks, Tony - for saying in print what so many of us have mumbled to ourselves when seeing these hazardous drivers on the streets!
