Taking risks with songs like the Partridge Family’s “I think I love you” and last night with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is what has set apart Constantine Maroulis from the rest of the competition. He has not only grown better each week, he has proven his vocal ability without question. In addition to being a great singer, Constantine knows how to work the camera, getting the most of his airtime each week.Another American Idol contestant who continues to improve each week is Vonzell Solomon. During the first few weeks of the finals, you barely noticed her. Since the episode where she wore the cowboy boots and hat that were a gift from her father, she has made herself the woman to beat. She has unmatched vocal range and a shining personality with which few other contestants can compete.

Early on, I was a big fan of Nadia and Anwar, but as of late, both have faded into the shadows of Constantine and Vonzell. Of the remaining contestants, I expect Anthony and Scott will be in the bottom three tonight. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see Carrie as the other member of the bottom group as well. She looked out of her element last night trying to pull off a Pat Benetar song. Although she sang well, I just couldn’t “buy in” to her as a rock singer.

Overall, I think this year has the strongest competition of any shows to date. I’ve been extremely impressed with the personal and vocal improvement each contestant makes from week to week. I’m not a big reality TV fan, but I do enjoy watching these performers have an opportunity they couldn’t get anywhere else.

Reviewing the progress made by everyone and the recent voting history, I’m betting the final three contestants will be Vonzell, Constantine and Carrie (but only if she stays true to who she is and doesn’t attempt another rock hit). I haven’t placed my final bets on who will win it all yet.
